Kalk Bay, on Cape Town’s False Bay coast, is the little seaside village that has it all – oozing the nostalgic charm of past grandeur, while buzzing with modern quirkiness and sophistication. There’s a little fishing harbour where, yes, the fishing boats still anchor; there’s a main road lined with shops, eateries and that essential ice-cream parlour; and there’s a labyrinth of cobbled lanes hiding even more fabulous finds. And then there’s the ocean, just metres away: blue and beautiful in all its moods.

Kalk Bay is as popular now as it was 100 years ago, when it was the de rigueur seaside destination – and the grand mansions that remain attest to that. The Majestic Hotel & Apartments is one such testament – formerly a hotel, it was built in 1916, rescued from ruin in 2006 and converted (along with a few other buildings) into an eye-catching pink complex in the very hub of Kalk Bay. It’s now called The Majestic Village, and this studio apartment is both quaint and comfortable, with a fully equipped kitchen, an open-plan living room and an airy balcony.
