Meet Dwarriega and Poortjies, two identical barn-like cottages perched amid pristine fynbos on a 110-hectare farm. The landscape is stark but exquisite – and the same goes for the interior of these modern Karoo cottages. They’re designed around a single, elegant, light-filled space, with no division between the sleeping, bathing and living areas; no walls, in fact, other than the cottages’ outer dark-metal-clad shell.

It’s a Zen-like space, powered by solar energy and providing an intimate refuge surrounded by nature. Expect a king-size bed with fine linen, a freestanding bath and shower, a fully equipped kitchen (with a Smeg stove), an open-plan lounge and dining area and an indoor fireplace. Outside, you’ll find a wood-fired Kolkol hot tub and a view-drenched wraparound deck with an outdoor shower.
