Monument House: Cartref

A haven of off-the-grid luxury, this Franschhoek retreat combines glorious design with contemporary Cape Dutch architecture and top-to-toe sustainability. It sits on two hectares of formal indigenous gardens, where water features add a hint of Versailles grandeur. The estate was designed from the ground up by co-owner Wendy Smith, an interior designer who brings her Welsh heritage and many years living and working in Asia to the mix (she and husband Nishan live on the property).

Each of the cottages and suites is filled with pops of colour, luxurious finishes and airy indoor-outdoor living spaces. The estate is totally solar-powered (you’ll forget load-shedding is even a thing!), right down to underfloor heating and the picture-perfect heated swimming pool and jacuzzi.

Venture out to a different neighbouring wine estate each day, or walk into Franschhoek for foodie forays. It’s also just five minutes’ walk from the buzzing Franschhoek high street with its many restaurants, shops and galleries, and the Franschhoek Wine Valley is on your doorstep, too.

The homestead comprises a main house, two cottages and two luxury suites that may be rented exclusively (for 18 people) or independently from each other. Each space has a Welsh name that alludes to an undeniable feeling of calm and home.
